Afa Jamal, the Regional Communications Director for the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in the Northern Region, has sparked controversy by describing the current Nana Addo–Bawumia Government as the most corrupt administration in the fourth Republic of Ghana. Speaking on the morning political show of Radio Tamale, Jamal highlighted a series of alleged wrongdoings and financial mismanagement that he believes have tarnished the government’s reputation.

Jamal’s comments were prompted by statements made by Hon. Yaw Osarfo Marfo, the Senior Advisor to the President, during the Annual gathering of the Pentecostal Church Union. Marfo had called upon Christian leaders to play a role in curtailing destructive activities like illegal mining (Galamsey) that harm the environment and contribute to corruption. He emphasized the role of Christians, as the majority demographic in Ghana, in advocating for responsible actions to protect natural resources and stem corruption.

Responding to Marfo’s remarks, Afa Jamal cited numerous incidents that, in his view, have led to a decline in ethical governance and an increase in corruption within the government. He pointed out the alleged involvement of government appointees in scandals such as the PDS scandal, Cash-for-Seat saga, Ameri deal scandal, and the disappearance of over 500 excavators. These controversies, he argued, have resulted in significant financial losses for the state and have contributed to an atmosphere of corruption.

Moreover, Jamal referenced the comments made by the first Special Prosecutor, Mr. Martin Lamisi Amidu, who famously referred to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the “Mother Serpent of Corruption.” He also criticized the President’s refusal to reshuffle his appointees despite calls for such actions, as well as the President’s resistance to the calls for the resignation or dismissal of the Finance Minister in the wake of growing public concern.

While the claims made by Afa Jamal have ignited debate across the nation, the Nana Addo–Bawumia Government has vehemently denied the allegations of widespread corruption and maintains that it remains committed to good governance and transparency.

As the political discourse surrounding corruption continues to unfold, Ghanaians are grappling with differing perspectives on the performance of their government. The allegations raised by Jamal underscore the need for ongoing scrutiny of public officials and institutions to ensure accountability and effective governance.
