Philimond Atongbaa Asekuliga famed Philvo rebranded BB.Batongba’s journey began in the small village of Bongo, Balungo, where he grew up as a cowboy, tending to cows during the rainy season and attending school in the dry season. His love for music and dance blossomed during this period, with his early influences including legendary artists like Asambo and the rest.
With a creative spirit, BB. Batongba crafted his own makeshift guitar using a thread and a frytol bottle, which eventually led him to create his own version of the local instrument known as the Kologo. In 2010, his uncle helped him acquire a professional Kologo guitar, marking a significant step in his musical journey.
BB. Batongba’s talents caught the attention of his teachers and peers as he participated in cultural celebrations, playing the Kologo and local drums. His skills continued to grow when he gained admission to Bolgatanga Technical Institute ( BOLTECH), where he met a senior who shared his passion for the local guitar. This senior became his mentor and helped him make strides in his musical journey.
Through this mentorship, BB. Batongba’s talents were showcased during various performances, leading to his victory in a talent show and subsequent participation in a regional talent competition organized by Ras Wormz, a renowned rapper from the Upper East region. Philvo emerged as the ultimate winner in 2014.
Despite challenges, including unsuccessful attempts to connect with established artists like Stevo Atambire, Philvo’s determination led him to record his first single, “Think about your school,” produced by Lil John of Bestbeat Studio. He continued his musical pursuits, releasing singles and collaborating with fellow artists.
He recorded his first solo studio album in 2016 which wasn’t launched and launched his first album in 2018.
In 2019, BB. Batongba’s dedication was recognized by Stevo Atambire, who became his mentor after witnessing his commitment and passion. This partnership led to Philvo’s growth as an artist and the release of projects financed through his own efforts and assistance from supportive family members.
Despite limited resources, BB. Batongba remained steadfast in pursuing his musical dreams, performing at various events within the Bongo District and beyond. He continued to evolve as an artist, culminating in his upcoming album titled “Zero to Hero.” This album, scheduled for release in Kumasi on September 23, 2023, chronicles his journey from humble beginnings to his current position as a prominent Kologo artist in the Upper East Region.
BB. Batongba’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and unwavering dedication to his craft, and he envisions a future where his unique Kologo music reaches a wider audience as he delves into Afrobeat, Reggae, amapiano and several other genres with his instrument, with the hope of finding a financier or manager to further support his endeavors.
