GEM Ghana Educates Students on Menstrual Hygiene in Sang Girls Model JHS

In a concerted effort to promote girls’ empowerment and address a critical aspect of female health, Girls Empowerment Mission Ghana (GEM Ghana), a non-governmental organization operating in the Northern Region, undertook a sensitization visit to Sang Girls Model Junior High School in Mion District.

The visit aimed to impart essential knowledge on menstrual hygiene and the proper usage of sanitary pads to the student body.
During the visit, the officers of GEM Ghana conducted hands-on training sessions, demonstrating the correct usage of sanitary pads and instructing the students on proper disposal practices.

As part of their commitment to supporting the students’ well-being, GEM Ghana also donated a supply of sanitary pads and liquid soaps, contributing to an improved menstrual and personal hygiene environment.

Speaking to the media, the Executive Director of GEM Ghana, Samira Assabey Musah, emphasized the organization’s top priority of educating the girl child about menstrual health.

She noted that the lack of sufficient information on menstrual health often leads to unsafe practices among girls, making initiatives like this essential in fostering healthier habits and empowering the young female population.

Miss Samira called for the elimination of taxes on menstrual products, highlighting how these taxes have rendered the products unaffordable for many women and girls, especially those in rural areas. “Access to affordable menstrual products is not merely a matter of convenience but a fundamental necessity for women’s health and overall quality of life,” she noted.

The call made by the Executive Director found strong support from Mwintome Faustina, the Senior Prefect of the school. Faustina echoed the concerns raised by the director, emphasizing the adverse impact of unhygienic materials used by girls in place of sanitary pads.

According to her, the use of unhygienic materials presents potential risks to their reproductive health.
She expressed heartfelt appreciation to GEM Ghana for the education as well as the donation.

She acknowledged the timing of the sensitization visit, as it coincides with their final year exams, just a few weeks away. “We will diligently apply the knowledge gained from this visit to enhance our menstrual health and well-being and also educate our mothers about it,” she stated.

GEM Ghana’s visit to Sang Girls Model Junior High School exemplifies the organization’s dedication to creating positive change and better opportunities for girls in the region. By equipping the students with knowledge and resources, GEM Ghana continues to play a crucial role in advancing girls’ well-being and overall empowerment.
